Mom

Thematic focus, purpose, or intent

My intention for this project was to express gratitude to my mother. I believe the reason I have always been so artistically inclined was due to my mom’s nurturing. She always allowed me to pick up new mediums from the store, and she certainly always encouraged artistic endeavors to be done. I owe so much of who am I today to her, so I commemorate this piece to her. I chose him as the subject of my piece, not only for me, but for how my mother affects our entire family. She is a central part of our family for most all members. If she were not present amongst our family tree, our history would be drastically different. This is a representational three dimensional sculpture of my mom, which was inspired by the works of Renaissance art.

Content and Form

The scale of the paper sculpture is roughly 20 x 20in. The large scale of the project helps give the sculpture its illusion of volume and mass. The medium chosen for the sculpture was paper mache. I chose paper mache because I needed something malleable as it was still foldable. I used the paper’s planar abilities to create the surface of my mother's face. The first step in the project was creating the wire-mesh mold of my mom. After which, the paper was applied over it and was sculpted. After the face was sculpted the hair was applied. It was applied in the same fashion as the face but with a different visual texture given to it. It provides the sculpture with immense line. A problem to overcome was the force of gravity. In order to overcome it, it was essential to use a cardboard cut frame as support. The scale of the cardboard sculpture is 10x10 in. It was created to juxtapose life and death between the pieces. It was created in a way by using the additive and subtractive technique to create the unique form. The purpose of the piece was to craft a skull.

The emphasis of the piece focuses on the incredible movement of my brother. All of his motions are shown through the dynamic frames of the animation to procure his impressive stunt. I desired to capture the stunt onto a 2D frame through the technique of a barrier grid animation. The end goal should be astonishing to the eye’s of the viewers as the gymnast goes into his toe touch.

Thematic focus, purpose, or intent

When the slides are completed and up, there should be a vibrant array of a toe-touching gymnast flashing before the audience’s eyes. The animation consists of nine frames from the project one slides. I wanted to express the gymnast’s sheer power and form through an accurate motion of animation.

Content and Form

The elements and principles of design are implemented throughout the piece through the illusion of motion and space, pattern and texture, and rhythm of repetition. Through these examples, the project grants anticipated movement, impending action, and kinesthetic empathy. To create the illusion of movement, I produced a barrier grid animation from splitting the frames in appropriate lengths to a specifically spaced grid. However, I wanted to take another route and wanted to produce something powerful. I chose to illuminate the design with an LED lighting strip to show that immense power and to make the overall quality of the animation much more enhanced. To effectively implement lights into my design, I decided to laser cut another piece of acrylic plastic. I created the design from over 350 vertical lines that were intended to catch the light from the plastic to conceive a successful hologram effect. Once I effectively laser cut the design, I rebuilt a frame with the LED’s below the frame to cast the light through the admirable plastic design. Once it was assembled, I placed a printed grid between another plastic frame, and the design began to animate.
